Backyard Birds
Birds who visit Wisconsin backyards are usually welcomed by people because they are a joy to watch. But we must take precautions to keep them from harm.
How should I care for my bird feeder?
Bird feeders are a delightful way to attract birds to your yard. Different types of feeders and bird seed mixes can even attract specific types of birds. Whatever the kind, bird feeders should be cleaned at least twice a year with a 10 percent bleach (90 percent water) solution, because a dirty feeder can make birds sick and spread disease. Feeders should also be cleaned any time mold appears.
Do birdbaths need to be cleaned?
Birdbaths are a charming addition to a backyard and provide a service to birds, but it’s important to remember that dirty water can spread disease. If you have a birdbath, change the water frequently. The birdbath itself should be cleaned at least twice weekly with a bleach and water solution. Two-piece birdbaths with a heavy top on a pedestal are not recommended, as they have been known to fall on and injure larger animals like raccoons.
Can I stop birds from building nests on my house?
Birds find all kinds of places on houses to build their nests. The porch light fixture is a classic example. It’s elevated, stable and flat on top – perfect for a nest. The best prevention for this is to change the flatness on top. A forty-five degree slope will make it an unbuildable site for birds. Another way to stop nest-building is to attach a vertical mesh barrier to the spot.
